Join Kathryn & Jeremy Mathis and Tell Coy's School to Stop Discriminating Against Her
Last week, TLDEF filed a Complaint on behalf of 6-year-old Coy Mathis after her elementary school told her that she can no longer use the girls' bathrooms because she is transgender. This week, Coy's parents Kathryn & Jeremy have started a change.org petition asking Coy's school to allow her to once again use the girls' bathrooms so that she can return to school and be with her teachers and friends.
Kathryn and Jeremy write:
They gave Coy three options for where to go to the bathroom; the boys' room, the staff bathroom with adults, or the nurse's bathroom which is used by sick children.
Coy is not sick, she is not an adult, and she is not a boy.
Coy is a girl. She wears girls' clothes, is addressed by everyone at the school using female pronouns, and has been accepted by her classmates and teachers as a girl. But if the school separates her from all her classmates to use the bathroom, they are singling her out for mistreatment, and teaching her classmates that it's okay to discriminate.
TLDEF filed a civil rights Complaint on Coy's behalf because Colorado law bans discrimination against transgender children and Coy's school was violating her rights. Coy's mom and dad explain why they're also asking for your help to get Coy's school to do the right thing.
We want our children's school to treat our daughter equally because it's the right thing to do, not because the law forces them to.
Stand with the Mathis family - sign their petition here and urge Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 to stop teaching its students to discriminate against Coy and other transgender children.
