Effort to Repeal California’s School Success and Opportunity Act Has Failed

School Success

We are elated to learn that the effort to repeal California’s School Success and Opportunity Act—the new law ensuring that transgender kids have opportunities to do well in school—has failed.

Statement from Executive Director Michael Silverman:

“TLDEF strongly supports the School Success and Opportunity Act (Assembly Bill 1266). Attempts to repeal this law via referendum were unconscionable and an affront to all students. This law ensures that schools across California can create learning environments that allow all students to succeed. For transgender students, this includes access to school facilities and programs that match their true identities as boys and girls. Affording transgender students the ability to participate in sports teams and other activities consistent with who they are is crucial to their well being and personal development. We are proud to be part of the Support All Students Campaign, a broad coalition of nearly 100 state and national organizations supporting the new law.”
