Transgender Rights Group Congratulates Incoming Administration
TLDEF Expresses Hope Obama Administration Will Support Equal Rights for Transgender Americans
NEW YORK - As President-elect Barack Obama prepares for his inauguration next week, the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) congratulates the incoming administration and expresses hope it will work to ensure transgender Americans receive long overdue legal protections to which they are entitled.
“We look forward to working with the Obama administration to ensure transgender Americans are part of the hope and promise on which he campaigned,” TLDEF executive director Michael Silverman said. “The last eight years have seen a woeful lack of concern for the well-being of transgender Americans. We look forward to turning the page with the incoming administration.”
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act (LLEEA) are among the vitally important pieces of legislation that languished under the Bush administration. An inclusive ENDA and LLEEA would provide equal rights to transgender Americans who continue to suffer discrimination in the workplace and hate crimes based on their gender identity and expression. We urge the Obama administration to ensure transgender Americans are not left behind.
“Ensuring passage of ENDA and LLEEA provides the Obama administration a unique opportunity to provide basic equal rights to transgender Americans across the country,” Silverman continued. “We look forward to working with the White House to help ensure this possibility becomes a reality.”
