Transgender Rights Group to Hold Third Annual Transgender Health Fair

Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund seeks to connect transgender New Yorkers to supportive health care services

NEW YORK - The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) will hold the third annual Transgender Health Fair in Manhattan.  The fair is the largest of its kind in the nation.  Transgender people often go without medical care because of the discrimination and prejudice they face within the health care system.  The health fair seeks to connect transgender people with supportive health care providers and medical professionals.  St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan and community-based groups will provide health screenings and educational information to transgender consumers who attend the fair.

WHO:  Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer; Transgender community members, local health care providers; TLDEF executive director Michael Silverman; St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan Department of Medicine chair Dennis Greenbaum.

WHEN:  Wednesday, June 3, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

WHERE:  Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, 208 W. 13th Street, Manhattan

WHY:  "Transgender people deserve non-discriminatory, high-quality health care like everyone else," TLDEF executive director Michael Silverman said.  "The Transgender Health Fair is a big step forward in moving transgender people from the margins to the mainstream of the health care system," he added.
