Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund Responds to Supreme Court Decision to Hear Marriage Equality Cases

New York, NY — The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) today responded to the United States Supreme Court’s decision to hear challenges to restrictions on the freedom to marry in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. The move sets the stage for a ruling in June that could bring marriage equality to the entire nation.

Statement from Executive Director Michael Silverman

“We applaud the Supreme Court for bringing marriage equality to the forefront and moving a step closer to deciding this issue nationally once and for all. LGBT people, including the transgender families we serve, need protection and recognition. With 36 states now extending marriage protections following key rulings last year, the tide has turned dramatically toward fairness and justice. It is time for marriage equality in all 50 states and we urge the Supreme Court to remember the real people whose lives hang in the balance as it considers arguments this spring and likely comes to a final decision this June.”
