Second Summer Name Change Project Training
TLDEF's Name Change Project continues to experience incredibly high demand for the services our pro bono lawyers provide. We've added a second summer training session to meet the demand. The Name Change Project provides legal name change services to transgender New York City residents through partnerships with some of New York City’s most prestigious law firms. Our next training is being held on Tuesday, June 15, 2010.
For many transgender people, a legal name change is a first step towards conforming their legal identities to the way they identify and live their lives. But securing a legal name change can be an intimidating experience, involving interaction with the court system and judges that is foreign to many people. By ensuring that transgender people have adequate legal representation when seeking name changes, TLDEF's Name Change Project ensures that they can successfully negotiate the legal process and move forward with their lives.
In just the two-and-a-half years since it was founded, the Name Change Project has helped more than 500 people. But we’re only able to do it with the help of our committed law firm partners and the pro bono legal services they provide.
In addition to an initial training, TLDEF provides ongoing support to all attorneys participating in the project. It’s a great way to get client contact and courtroom experience while helping someone in need. Participating attorneys must be admitted to the bar or have a supervisor at the firm who is admitted.
