TLDEF Names Donna Levinsohn as Senior Staff Attorney

New York, NY- Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund announces the appointment of Donna Levinsohn as the organization’s new Senior Staff Attorney. Donna brings more than 30 years of experience practicing civil litigation in New York City, with expertise in the fields of commercial litigation and employment litigation in both state and federal courts. Most recently, she was Counsel at Warshaw Burstein, LLP, and was previously New York Counsel at Kaye Scholer LLP (now Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP).  She received her B.A. from Yale and her J.D. from Harvard Law School.

"We enthusiastically welcome Donna Levinsohn to serve as TLDEF’s new Senior Staff Attorney. Her outstanding track record as a litigator and longstanding commitment to fighting for transgender equality make her uniquely qualified for this post," said TLDEF Executive Director Jillian Weiss. "At a time when our civil rights face continual assaults, it is reassuring to join forces with a highly accomplished attorney like Donna who will work hand in hand with us to secure victories against discrimination in health care, employment, public accommodations and education. We are grateful for her service."

Donna has worked for decades to further the cause of LGBT rights in general and transgender rights in particular, as evidenced by her decade of work on the LGBT Rights Committee and the Sex and Law Committee of the Bar Association of the City of New York.  Among her many equality efforts, she participated in the preparation of Bar Association reports on the proposed trans-inclusive federal Employment Nondiscrimination Act, the proposed modernization of requirements for changing gender designations on New York State birth certificates, and (jointly with  Lambda Legal and the Human Rights Campaign) proposing transgender-affirming hospital policies which would facilitate equal access to quality healthcare for transgender patients.  Donna also served for a year on the board of LeGaL (the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York).

"I am thrilled and thankful for this opportunity to partner with TLDEF in its ongoing efforts to improve the lives of transgender Americans through groundbreaking litigation that advances equality for our community,” said Ms. Levinsohn. “At this critical moment in our movement’s history it’s an honor to use my experience to further the cause of justice alongside this organization’s superb team."

Donna  Levinsohn begins her new role on September 5.
